What is Yoga Nidra and is it right for me?

Yoga Nidra is also called ‘sleep yoga’. The word Nidra literally means ‘sleep’ in Sanskrit, although the goal is not to actually go to sleep. Through a guided meditation we bring your body into a deep state of relaxation while your mind remains awake. This gives you the opportunity to ‘be’ completely and activates your body’s self-healing capacity. During Yoga Nidra you usually lie comfortably on your back and relax all your body parts one by one during a body scan.

What do we do during a Yoga Nidra class?

At Open Yoga we teach Yoga Nidra in combination with Restorative Yoga, during the XL Restorative Yoga Nidra class. Restorative yoga is a form of yoga in which we use (a lot of) props, such as pillows, blankets and blocks, to help you fully relax and release tension. Read more about Restorative Yoga »

Yoga Nidra for beginners

You can also do Yoga Nidra as a beginner. Because both Restorative and Yoga Nidra are passive forms of yoga, we move little and you receive a lot of explanation and guidance.

If you are not used to lying still for long periods of time, staying awake may be a challenge for you. Accidentally falling asleep is always allowed ;)
